Ukraine Could Join Russia-Based Enrichment Center

Ukraine is considering joining an international uranium enrichment center based in Russia, the Associated Press reported yesterday (see GSN, May 11).

Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych met with Russian atomic energy chief Sergei Kiriyenko yesterday in Kiev to discuss the project, which is intended to provide a reliable supply of nuclear power fuel to nations that do not have their own fuel production facilities.

“We will consider the issue and make a decision,” Yanukovych said.  “I see no special problems.”

Ukrainian officials would soon visit the developing enrichment facility at Angarsk, he added (Associated Press/Kiev Post, June 5).
