IAEA Qualifies Concerns on Pakistani Nuclear Safety

The International Atomic Energy Agency yesterday tried to resolve tensions created with Pakistan earlier this week when the agency’s chief raised questions about the security of the country’s nuclear arsenal, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, Jan. 9).

Director General Mohamed ElBaradei meant to “call attention to the need to bolster nuclear safety and security measures, not only in Pakistan, but also everywhere in the world where nuclear materials or facilities exist,” said IAEA spokeswoman Melissa Fleming.

ElBaradei and other IAEA officials “follow closely all situations that could have a potential impact on nuclear safety and security anywhere,” she said.  “This remains the core of the agency's mission” (Agence France-Presse/Google News, Jan. 11).
