Senegal Joins Global Nuclear Power Program From Tuesday, February 5, 2008 issue.

Senegal Joins Global Nuclear Power Program

Senegal has joined a U.S.-led effort to expand the global use of nuclear power, the Energy Department announced last week (see GSN, Dec. 12, 2007).

With Senegal’s participation, the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership now has 20 members.  Energy Department officials have advocated the program as a way to meet growing international electricity demands without contributing to climate change problems and without risking the spread of nuclear weapon technology.

“We welcome the Republic of Senegal as GNEP’s newest partner,” said Assistant Energy Secretary Dennis Spurgeon in a press release.  “Senegal is currently considering nuclear power as a way to meet their growing energy demands and they recognize GNEP as a valuable forum in which to explore the benefits of safe and emissions-free nuclear energy” (U.S. Energy Department release, Feb. 1).
