Iraq: United Kingdom Charges Syria of Violating Sanctions The United Kingdom has charged Syria, a new U.N. Security Council member, with purchasing oil from Iraq in violation of sanctions, Reuters reported today (see GSN, Jan. 16). During a recent meeting of the council’s Iraqi sanctions committee, British officials charged that Syria was purchasing up to 100,000 barrels of oil per day from Iraq in violation of U.N. sanctions imposed after the Gulf War. Syria did not have time to respond to the British charges and discussions on the matter are set to resume at the committee’s next meeting, for which no date has yet been set. Syrian U.N. Ambassador Mikhail Wehbe said he had no comment on the British allegations. Previously, Syria has said it was simply testing the pipeline and last year told U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell that it would abide by the sanctions. “Our own view is that this is the most serious breach of sanctions on Iraq since 1990,” said a British official. “It is flagrant and the Syrians are not telling the truth about it” (Evelyn Leopold, Reuters, Jan. 29).
