U.S. Response:  Ridge Postpones Trip to Nevada Test Site

U.S. Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge has canceled his visit to the Nevada Test Site scheduled for tomorrow (see GSN, Jan. 4).  Ridge planned to visit the site with Nevada Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign to consider proposals to transform the former nuclear test site into the main U.S. counterterrorism training center.

Ridge postponed the visit due to meetings in Washington concerning the budget and the president’s State of the Union address, Homeland Security spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.  “Gov. Ridge hopes to get out there sometime in the future,” he said.

Reid has advocated transforming the former nuclear weapon test site into a center to train police, firefighters and public health workers in counterterrorism.  The site already hosts bioterrorism training sessions several times a year.

Ridge remains scheduled to visit Salt Lake City this week to discuss security for the Winter Olympics, Johndroe said (Associated Press, Jan. 7).
