Iran:  Modified Shahab 3 Missile Fails Test Flight

Iran has modified a Shahab 3 missile to increase its range but the test flight of the altered missile failed earlier this year, a U.S. defense official said yesterday (see GSN, Oct. 18).

The test flight occurred in July but the missile did not function correctly, according to the official.  Iran has conducted successful test flights of the regular Shahab 3 missile, which can fly 800 miles, but there was no indication how far the modified missile was intended to travel (see GSN, May 28).

The Shahab 3 is based on North Korean technology but Iran produces the missile domestically, U.S. officials have said (John Lumpkin, Associated Press/Yahoo.com, Oct. 22).
