U.S. Plans II: Officials Plan Night Test for Ground-Based Midcourse Defense The U.S. Missile Defense Agency plans to conduct a night test of a missile interceptor Dec. 11, Defense Daily reported yesterday (see GSN, Oct. 17). To allow time for introducing a new interceptor into the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense program, the test is expected to be the last in the program until spring 2003. Officials planned the test for night because the agency has come under criticism for only conducting intercept tests during daylight hours, a Defense Department official said. In all other aspects, the test will be the same as previous GMD intercept tests, officials said. After the test, the agency plans to focus on moving hardware into the missile defense test bed at Fort Greely, Alaska, program officials said (see GSN, Aug. 19). The White House has increasingly pressured the agency to prepare the test bed, according to industry officials. U.S. President George W. Bush has directed officials to make the test bed operational before the next presidential election, they added (Kerry Gildea, Defense Daily, Nov. 20). For further information, see:
