Israel:  United States Delivers Two Patriot Batteries

Two batteries of U.S. Patriot missiles arrived in Israel yesterday in preparation for a large joint exercise by U.S. and Israeli troops (see GSN, Nov. 11).  Officials plan to leave the missiles in the country to help defend against any counterattack in a possible U.S.-led war against Iraq, Ha’aretz reported.

In addition to the Patriots, the U.S. Army and the Israeli Defense Forces plan to practice using Arrow missiles and ship-based U.S. radar in the exercise to defend against the threat of weapons of mass destruction delivered on missile warheads or dropped from the air, according to Ha’aretz (Amos Harel, Ha’aretz, Dec. 11).
