France: Confiscated Vial Probably Not Chemical Weapon Material A suspicious vial discovered in a raid Monday in Paris probably contains no chemical or biological warfare agent, a French official said yesterday (see GSN, Dec. 18). Authorities arrested four suspected terrorists in an apartment outside Paris that contained a protective suit and a vial of an unidentified substance. French authorities have not released the results of tests on the substance, but one official said it appears to be “some sort of potential explosive rather than anything else,” the Associated Press reported today. “We are more in the explosives field than in the chemical or biological,” the official added. Officials have announced that a search of the apartment turned up iron perchlorate, which can be used to make explosives. During a Wednesday search of the apartment, investigators also discovered detonator parts hidden in a washing machine (John Leicester, Associated Press/Yahoo.com, Dec. 19).
