U.S. Plans I: TRW Restructuring to Focus on Missile Defense U.S. defense contractor TRW has been restructuring its operations to focus more on work for a U.S. missile defense system, a senior TRW official said Monday (see GSN, March 6). The restructuring brings together TRW’s most effective elements, said Patrick Caruana, vice president of TRW Space and Electronics’ missile defense business. As part of the restructuring, Caruana will head TRW’s missile defense development programs, including work on the Space Based Infrared Systems Low (SBIRS-Low) program, the Airborne Laser program, the Space Based Laser program and the Tactical High Energy Laser program (see related GSN story, today). TRW also will work on both components of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency’s national industry team, Caruana said. Boeing has won the contract for the team’s system and engineering work. Lockheed Martin has been awarded the contract to head the team’s battle management and command and control work (see GSN, Jan. 11). TRW will work with Lockheed Martin in developing a command and control system and will also work with Boeing in integration and engineering efforts, Caruana said. “We are an integral part of the national team. … We work through the contracts the government has provided to” Boeing and Lockheed Martin, Caruana said (Kerry Gildea, Defense Daily, March 12).
