U.S.-Russia II:  Bush and Putin Discuss Arms Cuts

U.S. and Russian Presidents George W. Bush and Vladimir Putin talked via phone yesterday to discuss nuclear arms reductions (see GSN, March 22).

“Both leaders expressed their intention to make progress on key issues in anticipation of their May meeting in Moscow and St. Petersburg,” White House spokesman Sean McCormack said (Associated Press/Yahoo.com, March 27).

“Both sides have confirmed their readiness to solve all outstanding issues in a swift and constructive way,” a Kremlin statement said.

Russian and U.S. officials have said they hope the two countries can reach an agreement on nuclear cuts in time for the presidential summit in May (Associated Press/Moscow Times, March 28).

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell plans to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov in Spain early in April to discuss nuclear weapons cuts, Associated Press reported.  Their meeting will occur during the European Union’s semiannual ministerial meeting in Madrid, the State Department said (Associated Press/Yahoo.com).
