Anthrax: Hoax Suspect Found Guilty on Unrelated Charges Clayton Lee Waagner, suspected of sending more than 550 anthrax hoax letters to abortion providers, was convicted yesterday on six firearms and automobile theft charges (see GSN, Dec. 7, 2001). Waagner could be sentenced to 15 years to life in prison and fined up to $250,000 for each of the six counts, according to the Associated Press. Waagner’s past convictions for violent crimes could lead to him being sentenced to life without parole, federal authorities said. Waagner, who is not an attorney, defended himself during the trial. He said he was not surprised by the guilty verdict. “I expected it,” he said. Waagner has not been charged with sending the anthrax hoax letters to abortion providers, the AP reported. On FBI tapes played during the trial at Waagner’s request, he said he sent the letters to shut down clinics (Associated Press/New York Times, April 19).
