Polish Response:  First Biological Defense Research Facility Opens

Poland opened its first biological warfare defense research laboratory Thursday, Polish news agency PAP reported (see GSN, Jan. 17).

The laboratory, at the Pulway Veterinary Examination Center, is a biosafety level three facility, which allows researchers there to conduct work on microbes that could be used as biological weapons, including anthrax and smallpox.  The United States provided more than $500,000 to the facility, which cost more than $875,000, according to PAP.

“This is the only place in Poland where such research can be conducted in conditions that are safe for employees and the environment,” said Michal Bartoszcze, head of the center (PAP, April 25 in FBIS-EEU, April 25).
