India-Russia:  Walls Go Up at Kudankulam

Russia has begun erecting the walls for the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in southern India, after having completed construction of the foundation (see GSN, April 1).

“Now we are beginning to construct the reactor section and the plant building itself,” said Viktor Kozlov, director of the Russian Atomstroyexport company, which oversees the construction.

Several Russian engineering facilities are producing various pieces of equipment for the plant — including Izhora Motors of St. Petersburg, which is making the reactor body.

“We plan to start the assembly of the main equipment in two to three years,” Kozlov said.  “The total construction period of such a station is six years” (Interfax news agency/BBC Monitoring, April 27).
