Iraq: U.N. Agreement Needed Before Attacking Iraq, Blair Says The United Kingdom will support an attack on Iraq only with U.N. backing and after consultations with its European allies, British Prime Minister Tony Blair told the ruling Labor Party’s national executive committee. “Our policy is to divest Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, not to divest Iraq of Saddam Hussein,” Blair told the committee, the London Independent reported today. In light of U.S. threats that it will attack Iraq regardless of U.N. efforts to persuade Baghdad to accept weapons inspectors, Blair’s comments reassured the committee that the “bellicose rhetoric currently flying around is being deployed in order to get Saddam to the negotiating table,” said committee member Tony Robinson (Agence France-Presse/Yahoo.com, May 10).
