Threat Assessment:  FBI to Monitor Fourth of July Celebrations

The FBI plans to monitor Fourth of July events throughout the country because of fears that they could be targets for terrorist attacks, officials said yesterday.  The bureau is not basing its plans on any specific known threat, an official said (see GSN, June 14).

The monitoring effort is expected to include both electronic surveillance and a substantial number of field agents, according to the Associated Press.  There are increased concerns about mass transit systems and parades in urban areas because they would be more vulnerable to a terrorist attack using biological or chemical weapons, AP reported.

The U.S. Homeland Security Office has advised government personnel that security should be maintained at normal levels over the holiday, according to an office spokesman.

“It is important not to reduce the number of guards simply because it’s a holiday,” said Homeland Security spokesman Gordon Johndroe.  “All sections of government must maintain vigilance.  For the government, July 4 will be just another day at the office” (Christopher Newton, Associated Press/Atlanta Journal-Constitution, June 20).
