Iran: Russia Will Recover Spent Bushehr Fuel, Official Says Russia will retrieve spent nuclear fuel from the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which it is helping to build in Iran, a Russian Atomic Energy Ministry official said yesterday (see GSN, June 24). “Russia will definitely observe the principles of the International Atomic Energy Agency under which spent fuel will return to the country supplying the fuel,” Russian Deputy Atomic Energy Minister Valery Lebedev said, according to Interfax. Officials have incorporated a provision on the return of spent fuel into the agreement between Russia and Iran on the building of the Bushehr facility, Lebedev said. Officials will store the spent fuel in Iran for three years, however, to allow it to cool before shipping it to a Russian storage site, he said (Agence France-Presse, June 24).
