Anthrax:  FBI Completes Renewed Search at Florida Office

FBI agents yesterday completed a renewed search of the American Media Inc. headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla., where the first infections in last fall’s anthrax attacks are believed to have occurred (see GSN, Sept. 3).

“We wrapped up and we left,” FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela said, declining to provide additional details.

The FBI reentered the company’s building Aug. 28 to use new techniques to investigate the source of the anthrax that killed photo editor Robert Stevens and hospitalized employee Ernesto Blanco (see GSN, April 23).

Authorities have placed the building under quarantine for anthrax contamination since Oct. 7, and company officials are pressuring Congress to clean it up.  Senator Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) said he plans to offer legislation that would require the United States to take ownership of the building or assist in its decontamination (Associated Press/Miami Herald, Sept. 11).
