Nunn Criticizes Push for New Nuclear Weapons

Former U.S. Senator Sam Nunn (D-Ga.) criticized the White House Tuesday for pushing the research of new low-yield nuclear weapons, saying the effort is “counterproductive to our own security interests,” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported (see GSN, Dec. 8).

In recent defense bills, lawmakers backed by U.S. President George W. Bush have lifted a ban on researching low-yield nuclear bombs and allocated about $7 million toward studies on the new weapons.

“I think it’s very damaging to America’s security position because I think it sets back our effort and our moral persuasion effectiveness in trying to move the world away from nuclear weapons,” Nunn said.

He said that international cooperation is needed to prevent WMD attacks.

“We have to have that cooperation, not because cooperation will give us a warm, fuzzy feeling of community, but because every other method will fail,” Nunn said (George Edmonson, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dec. 17).
