Radiological Weapons:  Russian Authorities Prevent Osmium-187 Sale

Russian authorities announced today that they prevented the sale of a quantity of radioactive osmium-187 to organized crime elements (see GSN, Feb. 14).

Russian Federal Security Service officials in the city of Omsk, located in the Siberian region, have detained one person with a quantity of osmium-187 and another with 158,000 counterfeit Iraqi dinars, said security service spokeswoman Natalya Grutsina.  The two people had attempted to sell the osmium-187, contained in a vial disguised as a pen, for $30,000 to organized crime members from Moscow, according to ITAR-Tass (Associated Press/Yahoo.com, Feb. 28).
