U.S. Response: Terror Alert Lowered U.S. officials downgraded the national terror alert level to “yellow” today, the Associated Press reported (see GSN, March 18). The threat level was raised to “orange” March 17, shortly before the United States attacked Iraq. The move could reflect diminished fears of a terrorist attack in response to the U.S. invasion, AP reported. Intelligence reviews led to the lowering of the terror alert level, according to Brian Roehrkasse, a spokesman for the Homeland Security Department. Some security measures will also end that were put in place by Operation Liberty Shield, a nationwide security enhancement effort, he said. It was not clear whether the upgraded security measures prevented any attacks. “We believe that during Operation Liberty Shield there were individuals in places, at times, where they should not have been,” Roehrkasse said (John Lumpkin, Associated Press/Yahoo.com, April 16).
