Bush Nominates Environmental Protection Agency Chief as Next Health and Human Services Secretary

U.S. President George W. Bush yesterday nominated Environmental Protection Agency head Michael Leavitt as his next health and human services secretary, according to Knight Ridder (see GSN, Dec. 6).

If confirmed by the Senate, Leavitt would replace Tommy Thompson as secretary.

Leavitt “has managed the EPA with skill and with a focus on results,” Bush said. “He’s an ideal choice to lead one of the largest departments in the United States government.

Agencies within the department include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health (Seth Borenstein, Knight Ridder/SanLuisObispo.com, Dec. 14).
