Japanese Experts Arrive in China to Help Dispose of World War II-Era Chemical Weapons


A Japanese team of experts arrived yesterday at the Chinese city of Qiqihar to help dispose of a nearby cache of World War II-era Japanese chemical weapons, according to China Daily (see GSN, June 15).

Last month, more than 50 munitions were unearthed and reburied outside of Qiqihar, where a Japanese chemical weapons unit was stationed during World War II. The Japanese team today is expected to re-excavate the munitions and to search for possible additional bombs, according to China Daily.

Japan has promised to recover and destroy all World War II-era chemical weapons in China by 2007, China Daily reported (Wu Gang, China Daily, June 180.
