Israel to Distribute Antiradiation Pills From Friday, July 23, 2004 issue.

Israel to Distribute Antiradiation Pills

The Israeli army is set to begin distributing pills to prevent radiation sickness next month in the area surrounding the country’s two nuclear reactors, Associated Press reported (see GSN, July 9).

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz informed the Israeli Cabinet of the plan Sunday, according to the Defense Ministry.

Distribution of the medication is scheduled to begin Aug. 8 in Dimona and Yavne, according to a report in Bamahane, a weekly publication for soldiers. Israel has stockpiled the pills for decades, and is distributing them now in case of a nuclear accident or an attack on one of the reactors, Bamahane added.

Security sources told the Maariv daily that the decision does not reflect a change in the threat level for a radiation incident (Mark Lavie, AP/Yahoo!News, July 22).
