CSI Finds No Suspect Cargo at German Ports

German ports have not blocked any cargo shipments because of terrorism concerns during their two-year involvement in the U.S. Container Security Initiative, Lloyd’s List reported today (see GSN, Jan. 11).

The number of suspicious containers has been “comparatively small, given the large number of boxes shipped to the U.S.,” said Rainer Ehmcke, an official in the German Finance Ministry.

U.S. authorities have found approximately 60 suspicious containers each month in Bremerhaven, which has handled about 36,000 boxes destined for the United States over that period. Of the suspicious containers, about 50 a month have been scanned with X-rays, while the others have been cleared when the shipper or freight forwarder provided additional information to authorities. In Hamburg, roughly 40 suspicious boxes out of approximately 9,000 have been counted each month, and approximately 30 of those have undergone X-ray inspections, according to Lloyd’s List.

U.S. authorities issued a temporary hold on cargo in only a few cases, Lloyd’s List reported (Herbert Fromme, Lloyd’s List, Jan. 24).
