German Police Arrest Suspected Al-Qaeda Member Who Sought to Obtain Enriched Uranium

One of two suspected al-Qaeda terrorists arrested yesterday by German authorities unsuccessfully attempted to purchase enriched uranium, according to Knight Ridder (see GSN, Sept. 27, 2004).

The suspect, identified as Ibrahim Mohamed K., allegedly attempted to purchase 48 grams of enriched uranium in Luxembourg, according to Knight Ridder. Such an amount would not be enough for use in a nuclear weapon, and the planned use for the material remains unclear, police said.

Mohamed K’s involvement with al-Qaeda predates the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Knight Ridder reported. He has reportedly participated in the terrorist group’s training camps in Afghanistan (Matthew Schofield, Knight Ridder, Jan. 24).
