Full Operations to Resume Soon at Los Alamos

Work is expected to fully resume at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico within two weeks after having been halted last summer when computer disks containing classified information were reported missing, according to the Associated Press (see GSN, Jan. 19).

Los Alamos Director Peter Nanos told employees last week that it should “look like a normal day” at the facility by Jan. 31, and that work would proceed “without impediment.”

Most work at the laboratory has already resumed, but weapons work and other procedures remained suspended until now, according to AP.

During the halt, the laboratory discovered about 3,000 issues that needed to be addressed, according to spokesman Kevin Roark. Among the new procedures that have since been put into place is a new method to store and track computer disks containing classified information in central libraries, AP reported.

“This will be a tough year, but I feel that fundamentally we are moving in the right direction and laying the groundwork to ensure this institution’s future and your future,” Nanos said (Associated Press/Yahoo!News, Jan. 22).
