U.S. Homeland Security Chief Leaves Top Posts Open Pending Organization Review

U.S. Homeland Security Department Secretary Michael Chertoff is leaving top offices open while he considers reorganizing the department, the Washington Post reported today (see GSN, Feb. 27).

“Some top position may not be filled until the review is complete,” according to one department official.

Current and former department officials said Chertoff is running the department differently than his predecessor Tom Ridge, who officials contend was reluctant to make difficult decisions.

Chertoff, on the other hand, demands a more structured department and has brought many people who worked with him at the Justice Department familiar with his management style to the Homeland Security Department, the Post reported (John Mintz, Washington Post, May 25).
