Japan Seen as Top Partner in U.S. Missile Defense

A senior U.S. defense official said last week that Japan is Washington’s most important international partner in its missile defense program, United Press International reported yesterday (see GSN, March 9).

Assistant Defense Secretary for International Security Policy Peter Flory told a House Armed Services subcommittee that Tokyo’s commitment to spend around $1 billion has made it the largest partner in U.S. missile defense.

“The United States and Japan have agreed to work together to develop a more capable sea-based interceptor,” Flory said.

Flory added that the United States is negotiating a missile defense-related Defense Technical Cooperation Agreement with Russia (Martin Sieff, United Press International/SpaceWar.com, March 15).
