U.S., Kazakhstan Sign Radiation Detection Agreement From Tuesday, May 9, 2006 issue.

U.S., Kazakhstan Sign Radiation Detection Agreement

The United States will help Kazakhstan deploy radiation detectors at border crossings to block smuggling of nuclear or radiological materials that could be used in weapons, the U.S. Energy Department announced Friday (see GSN, April 4, 2005).

The agreement falls under the U.S. Second Line of Defense program, in which the National Nuclear Security Administration installs radiation sensors and trains personnel at foreign border crossings, airports and seaports.

“Establishing strong border security partnerships with willing partners such as Kazakhstan [is] critical to preventing the smuggling of nuclear and other radioactive materials. The U.S. and Kazakhstan share a strong commitment to keeping nuclear weapons beyond the reach of terrorists,” Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman said in a release (U.S. Energy Department release, May 5).
