U.S., Russia Prepare for High-Level Talks

U.S. plans to deploy missile defenses in Eastern Europe are likely to dominate high-level U.S.-Russian talks Friday, ITAR-Tass reported today (see GSN, Oct. 4).

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice are scheduled to meet with their Russian counterparts Friday in Moscow.

“As the two countries’ presidents agreed, the main attention at the talks is planned to be given to issues of missile defense,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today.

Other important topics, however, would also be addressed, he said, including Russia’s adherence to a conventional weapons arms control agreement (see GSN, July 16) and the question of whether to extend some features of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, due to expire in 2009 (see GSN, Sept. 4; ITAR-Tass, Oct. 9).
