Japan Holds Counterterrorism Drill

Japanese military and law enforcement personnel responded to the simulated release of sarin nerve agent today during a joint counterterrorism exercise, the Japan Economic Newswire reported (see GSN, March 21).

Authorities conducted the drill, in which terrorists released the chemical agent from a ship at the Japanese port of Chiba, to prepare for a string of meetings and summits that the Group of Eight industrialized nations plans to hold in Japan in 2008.

Roughly 1,300 people from the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, Coast Guard and more than 100 other organizations took part in the exercise, which also involved train station bombings.  The participants moved to detain suspected terrorists while evacuating injured people and other residents as quickly as possible (Japan Economic Newswire, Nov. 21).
