Pakistan Tests Nuclear-Capable Missile

Pakistan today test-fired its indigenously built Shaheen 1, a midrange ballistic missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to a target within 440 miles, Pakistani army officials said (see GSN, Nov. 29, 2006).

The army’s strategic force command launched the missile near the end of a troop training exercise, Pakistan’s military said in a statement.   Launches of the Shaheen 1 missile are common during Pakistani military drills, according to Agence France-Presse.

Pakistani Army chief Gen. Ashfaq Kiyani praised officers and technicians involved with the test “on achieving high standards of training and excellent results,” the statement said.

Pakistan has no aggressive intentions toward neighboring countries although it has developed a strong nuclear deterrent, Kiyani said (Agence France-Presse/Spacewar.com, Jan. 25).
