Chinese Army Prepares for Olympics Security

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army is training to respond to a nuclear or chemical weapons attack against the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Agence France-Presse reported yesterday (see GSN, Dec. 18, 2007).

“We have massive training programs before the Olympics to better prepare against any possible threat,” one officer told the Xinhua News Agency.

Troops are also conducting rescue and evacuation drills ahead of the Aug. 8-24 games.  Police, private firms and volunteers are also expected to be involved in security operations (Agence France-Presse/Khaleej Times, Feb. 18).

Chinese military personnel previously have conducted drills on the response to an airplane hijacking or the detonation of a radiological “dirty bomb,” which would use conventional explosives to spread radioactive material, Kyodo News reported (Kyodo News/Japan Today, Feb. 18).

Meanwhile, police officials from eight nations are receiving bioterrorism defense training this week in the Philippines, the Inquirer newspaper reported.

An Interpol bioterrorism expert is leading the five-day session involving personnel from Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

“(Since) bioterrorism is a global threat, we must also respond (on) a global scale to prevent such incidents from happening and act adequately if it happens,” said Philippine National Police Director General Avelino Razon Jr. in a prepared statement.  “Though the concept of bioterrorism is still quite new to us, it is never too early for us to be prepared for it and to prevent it from happening in the near future by acquiring needed skills in detecting and assessing its imminent effects” (Thea Alberto, Inquirer, Feb. 19).
