Iraqi Leaders Approve Execution of “Chemical Ali” From Friday, February 29, 2008 issue.

Iraqi Leaders Approve Execution of “Chemical Ali”

Iraq’s three-member presidency council has given the final necessary approval for execution of Ali Hassan al-Majid, the Hussein regime official known as “Chemical Ali” for ordering the use of chemical weapons during the mass killing of Iraqi Kurds in the 1980s, the Associated Press reported today (see GSN, Nov. 30, 2007).

Al-Majid was sentenced to death last June along with former Iraqi Defense Minister Sultan Hashim Ahmad al-Tai and former military deputy operations chief Hussein Rashid Mohammed, after the three had been convicted of committing genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity during the anti-Kurd Anfal campaign.

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and two vice presidents declined to approve the executions of al-Tai and Mohammed following Sunni objections that they had been forced to follow the orders of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Al-Majid could be hanged at any time, according to a prosecutor and a government adviser.

The presidency council’s decision was relayed by telephone to U.S. officials and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who have planned a meeting to determine the date and site of the execution, a government adviser said (Qassim Abdul-Zahra, Associated Press/Google News, Feb. 29).
