Ohio Guard Receives Biological Detection Equipment

A National Guard team in Ohio last month became the first to receive the Joint Biological Point Detection System, a next-generation tool for sensing and identifying dangerous disease agents, the U.S. Army said yesterday (see GSN, May 25, 2007).

Officials hailed the system as the world’s most advanced biological threat detector when the National Guard’s 637th Chemical Company formally received it on Jan. 12.

“This is the first time the National Guard has had this capability,” said Air Force Col. Daniel Berry, joint biological defense project manager.  “And since the National Guard takes care of both civilians and military members, they now have the fastest response times available because of the Biological Integrated Detection System.”

The National Guard plans to distribute 12 additional system units to California, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Texas and Washington state (U.S. Army release, Feb. 5).
