U.S. Confirms New Operator for Savannah River Site

A five-company partnership said Friday that it has received the final go-ahead to take over operations at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina after the federal government rejected a final appeal by the facility’s current contractor, the Aiken Standard reported (see GSN, Jan. 11).

“We are absolutely delighted with this great news,” said Chuck Munns, president and CEO of Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC.  “Delay and uncertainty are now behind us and we and the men and women of [the Savannah River Site] can now move forward to effect a positive, safe transition.”

The parent company of the site’s current main contractor filed an appeal with the U.S. Government Accountability Office in January to keep its contract.  The agency dismissed the appeal, and the Energy Department sent the consortium a “notice to proceed” with a planned 90-day transition between the companies.

Present contractor Washington Savannah River Co. and Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC were the only companies to submit bids for the site’s operation.  The contract is estimated to be worth $4 billion over five years.  The change in operators at the Savannah River Site would be the first in 18 years and the second in the facility’s history (Haley Hughes, Aiken Standard, April 26).
