U.S. Response: Military Orders CW DetectorsThe U.S. military has ordered 270,000 chemical weapons detectors, CNET News.com reported Friday (see GSN, July 17). The detectors, which are called Joint Chemical Agent Detector ChemSentry and made by BAE Systems, cost $2,000 each and can detect chemical agents including sarin and VX. Each detector is smaller than a laptop computer. Wind River Systems, the software manufacturer for the devices, also expects to sell them to civilian customers such as fire departments, a spokesman said (Stephen Shankland, CNET News.com/New York Times, Aug. 9).
