LOCATION: Tuoli, 35 km south of Beijing in "China Nuclear Town." Established in 1984.

CIAE is the main research organization of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC). It conducts research and development in nuclear physics, reactor engineering, nuclear technology, plutonium extraction, and uranium isotope separation and is involved in the research, development, and application of nuclear and radiation science and technology. It has ten accelerators, two electromagnetic isotope separators, hot cells, and other facilities for reactor engineering, radiochemistry, and isotope research and production and conducted early research on the hydrogen bomb and uranium hexafluoride (UF6) production. CIAE succeeded the Institute for Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Location of research reactors.

Before the establishment of the Lanzhou plant, it was also the location of the gaseous diffusion laboratory where China developed its uranium enrichment technique. It is responsible for eight research institutes and more than 50 research offices, and is currently designing and constructing a 60 MWth (25 MWe) sodium-cooled experimental fast breeder reactor (FBR) with Russian cooperation.
