Central Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, posted April 2002

China has consistently respected and supported efforts by non-nuclear-weapon states to establish nuclear-weapon-free zones in light of the situation in their own regions, and on the basis of agreement freely arrived at among themselves. China has unconditionally undertaken not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear-weapon states or nuclear-weapon-free zones. Proceeding from this position, China has signed and ratified relevant protocols to the treaties of Tlatelolco, Rarotonga and Pelindaba, and will sign the amended protocol to the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty.

China adjoins the Central Asian region and maintains good relationship with the states in this region. China appreciates and supports the efforts by Central Asian states to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone in light of the region's situation. We believe that the problems with the present draft treaty will be properly solved through friendly consultations.
