Fuel Fabrication

According to the IAEA in 1995, China has one fuel fabrication facility in operation at Yibin with a LWR fuel fabrication capacity of 150 tons of HM/year. [IAEA, The Nuclear Fuel Cycle Information System: A Directory of Nuclear Fuel Cycle Facilities, 1995 Edition, pp. 14, 42, 53.]

On 22 January 1996, France's Framatome signed an agreement with China to assist in the production of fuel for the Qinshan nuclear power plant. Framatome will provide assistance to the Yibin Nuclear Fuel Element Plant in the production of Qinshan's fuel. A new fuel fabrication plant (different from the one mentioned above) is reportedly under construction at Yibin, Sichuan Province. Planned to begin operation by the year 2000.
