Established in 1997, this department was created from the disarmament division of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences. It is now one of the principal government actors involved in formulating, articulating and defending China’s arms export policies. The department has a staff of about 40 persons, and is composed of the following four divisions:
- NUCLEAR DIVISION
- CHEMICAL/BIOLOGICAL DIVISION
- CONVENTIONAL/MISSILE DIVISION
- COMPREHENSIVE DIVISION: Covers general research, bilateral consultations, nuclear weapon-free zones (NWFZs), UN conferences, the Conference on Disarmament, regional security, and other areas not covered by the other three divisions.
