China's Missile Exports and Assistance to South America
China has conducted relatively little missile-related trade with countries in South America. In the mid-1980s, China reportedly provided Brazil with liquid fuel and guidance technology in exchange for solid fuel technology, and China reportedly assisted Brazil in the development of its Scud-derived SS-300 missile, developed by Avibras. In the 1990s China has signed some agreements with Brazil relating to space launch technology cooperation, and China and Brazil's Avibras have formed a joint venture to develop the VLS Space Launch Vehicle. China also reportedly sold Argentina missile fuel. Generally, there has been little in the way of Chinese missile trade in South America, and no substantial international concern about Chinese contribution to missile proliferation in the region.
