China and the Committee for the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (PAROS)

Summary

The Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space is an initiative currently stalled at the Conference of Disarmament in Geneva.  It builds upon previous UN treaties that banned the deployment of nuclear weapons in outer space by calling for a ban on the testing, deployment, or use of all weapons in outer space and preventing the advent of an arms race in outer space.

China and PAROS:

China has on numerous occasions proposed the creation of an ad hoc committee to debate PAROS and create a formal treaty because it views the OST and the COPUOS treaties as insufficient to prevent nations, specifically the US, from deploying weapon systems in outer space.  China has continued its efforts at the UN Conference for Disarmament to create a new legal instrument to regulate the use of outer space and guarantee the peaceful use of outer space for all nations.
