China's leading manufacturer and exporter of power generating equipment. Shanghai designed and manufactured China's first thermal power generating unit and the world's first water-cooled turbo-generating unit. It currently produces a wide variety of products ranging from equipment for hydro-power stations to nuclear power stations. The Shanghai Electric Group produced such equipment in 1997 with a total generating capacity of five million kilowatts, and its business volume increased 30 percent from 1996 to reach 10 billion yuan. Shanghai has become the fourth largest producer of thermal power generating units in the world next to those in the US, Japan and France. It is currently producing power-generating equipment for the second phase project of the Qinshan Nuclear Power Station in Zhejiang Province.
