Chairman: Sergey Mikhaylovich Mironov
Elected chairman on 5 December 2001, replacing Yegor Stroyev, who was named honorary chairman.  A geophysicist, Mironov was elected to the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly in 1994, and was first elected to the Federation Council on 13 June 2001 as a representative from the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly. In September 2000 he was also elected chairman of the St. Petersburg political bloc "Volya Peterburga" (the will of St. Petersburg).

Speaker: Gennadiy Nikolayevich Seleznev
Seleznev was elected to this post on 18 January 1996 after serving as a Deputy of the State Duma since December 1993.[1] He was re-elected in January 2000.[2]  Seleznev was born in 1947 in Serov, Sverdlovsk Region. He served in the Soviet Armed Forces in 1965-68, graduated from the Journalism Department of Leningrad State University in 1974, worked as a reporter for Komsomolskaya pravda, Uchitelskaya gazeta, and Pravda.[1]

Chair: General Andrey Ivanovich Nikolayev
Nikolayev, a member of the People's Deputy faction, was named chairman of the Defense Committee in January 2000.[1]  He replaced Roman Popkovich, who had headed the committee since 20 May 1998.  Popkovich had replaced retired Lieutenant General Lev Rokhlin, who was removed from the post after several months after leaving the Our Home is Russia faction in September 1997 and openly declaring his opposition to President Yeltsin's military reform policies.[2] Like Rokhlin and Popkovich, Nikolayev is a retired officer, having reached the rank of General in the Army.  He served as director of the Federal Border Service from 1994 to 1997.[1]

In April 2002 Shakkum, a member of the Russian Regions (Union of Independent Deputies) group, replaced Yuriy Maslyukov, a member of the Communist Partyand former deputy premier in Primakov's government.[1]  Maslyukov had replaced Vladimir Gusev in January 2000.[2]

Gurov's career was spent in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.  He headed the Sixth Main Directorate, which combats organized crime.  Gurov, a member of the Unity party, replaced Viktor Ilyukhin in January 2000.

COMMISSION TO RECONSIDER THE LAW ON THE TREATMENT OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE
The Law on the Treatment of Radioactive Waste was passed by the State Duma on 24 November 1995 and approved by the Federation Council.  However, on 27 December 1995 President Yeltsin rejected the law, and sent it back to the Duma for corrections.  In accordance with a proposal put forward by the Duma Environmental Committee, on 16 May 1997 the Duma formed this commission to make suggestions to the Duma for amending the law.
