FAR EAST DEVELOPMENTS

Power Developments file):

-
11/25/95: SCIENTISTS CRITICIZE FAR EAST NPP PLAN
-
Scientists of the Far Eastern chapter of the Russian Academy
of Sciences openly protested construction of the nuclear power plant, arguing
that the "nuclear lobby" has artificially created an energy crisis in the
Far East and that the nuclear power plant would be accident-prone because
of the seismic activity in the region. Academician Yelyakov stated that
there is also a lack of nuclear specialists in the Far East to service
the proposed nuclear power plant.

9/27/95: LOCALS OPPOSED TO NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
-
Residents of Komsomolsk-na-Amure strongly opposed the decision
of authorities of the Khabarovsk Region to begin the construction of the
Far East (Dalnevostochnaya) nuclear power plant.

6/22/95: INDEPENDENT EXPERTS OPPOSED TO NPP IN
FAR EAST
-
A group of independent experts, formed by the Khabarovsk
regional administration, concluded that a nuclear plant in the Far East
should not be constructed. Analysis of the documents on technical and economic
justification of the construction reportedly contained intentional misinformation.
Vladimir Desyatov, the leader of the group of experts, stated that the
group insists on a moratorium on nuclear power plant construction in Russia
and construction of an absolutely safe reactor. The group sent statements
to the Ministries of Atomic Energy, Health, Environment, and Emergency
Situations disclosing information on the consequences of nuclear accidents
and their cost, as well as on abandoned and secret nuclear waste burials.
Results of another inspection, reportedly conducted by the agents of those
agencies interested in the construction of the nuclear power plant, should
be released soon.

Eastern Nuclear Power Plant," SEGODNYA, 6/22/95, p. 3.]
