NITI is involved in designing and testing nuclear
power and propulsion reactors and their systems and parts. NITI also
develops and produces simulators and modeling systems for training reactor
operators, automatic control systems for industrial applications, automatic
radiation monitoring systems, and spent fuel-handling technology.[1] NITI
is participating in the project to design and build the NP-500 reactor,
a version of the VVER-640 that has advanced safety features.[2,3] Other
organizations involved in the NP-500 project include Minatom,
Rosenergoatom, Atomenergoproyekt,
VNIIA, OKB Gidropress,
IPPE, SRIAR,
Siemens, and the Bavarian Society for the
Safety of Nuclear reactors.[3,4] The NP-500 is scheduled to be built
at the Northwest Scientific-Industrial
Center for Atomic Energy, co-located with NITI, by 2003.[4]
NITI is classified as a state enterprise,
and is subordinate to the Ministry of Atomic Energy.
