ACTIVITIES:
Built in the 1970s, Atommash began producing large-scale components for Russia's nuclear power program in 1978 including pressure vessels, internal reactor parts, and steam generators. The plant was transformed into a joint-stock company in 1994, and the associated town (Volgodonsk) became the property of the local municipal authorities. The Association was supposed to have produced eight RBMK-1000 reactors per year, but the lack of orders following the Chornobyl accident (also a RBMK-1000 reactor) caused severe financial problems at the facility.[1,2,3] According to Kommersant-Daily, privatization took place in 1993 and the capacity of the plant was three reactors per year.[3] The enterprise went bankrupt in 1997 and was bought by Energomashkorporatsiya. After restructuring, the financial situation at Atommash improved. The enterprise has several contracts with foreign customers, including Iran (see 1/2001 entry). The new owner of Atommash said in 2000 that the enterprise will focus primarily on production of equipment for the chemical and metallurgical industries, and not on the production of reactors.[4]  Atommash is also supplying equipment for the Tianwan nuclear plant in Lianyungang, China.[5]

ARCHIVED ATOMMASH DEVELOPMENTS (For more recent developments, see the Nuclear Research Facilities Developments file):

1/2001: ATOMMASH DELIVERED 60% OF EQUIPMENT FOR BUSHEHR NPP
The Atommash Production Association recently shipped equipment for the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Iran, including the metal reactor base. As of January 2001, Atommash has fulfilled 60% of its contract with the Iranian government. According to this contract, Atommash must also deliver four tanks for the automated cooling system, the fuel loading device, and provide technical services.

3/97: ATOMMASH TO RESTART PRODUCTION AFTER HAVING DECLARED BANKRUPTCY
The Atommash Production Association declared bankruptcy in September 1995. In an attempt to reverse its financial situation, Atommash will restart production. The workforce, the plant management, and the Volgodonsk city administration have cooperated to help Atommash recover. Atommash has registered itself as a company under a new name, Energomashkorporatsiya-Atommash, and hopes to double its production capacity this year. The company received new orders which will give it work for 10-15 years at full capacity.

2/96: ATOMMASH DIRECTOR REPLACED DUE TO FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES
A court ordered that the management of the Atommash Production Association, including Director General Vladimir Yegorov, be replaced due to the deteriorating financial situation at the facility. The association owes money to suppliers, utility companies, and back taxes to the government. Arbitrators appointed Alexander Stepanov, a manager, as Interim President. Stepanov must balance Atommash's books within six months.
