The Institute for Nuclear Research, founded in 1970,
is one of the main nuclear physics centers in Russia. It conducts
research in the areas of nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, and neutrino astrophysics. The Institute's facilities include a
meson facility based on a high-intensity linear proton and H-accelerator
in Troitsk, the Baksan Neutrino Observatory in Kabardino-Balkariya, and deep
underwater stationary telescopes at Lake Baykal.[1] In the 1990s, the Institute
began conducting more applied research, such as isotope production for
medical purposes.[2] The Institute participates in international projects
and works with many research centers around the world, including the
European Organization for
Nuclear Research, Los Alamos National
Laboratory, Brookhaven National
Laboratory,
High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (Japan),
High Energy
Physics laboratory DESY (Germany), and others.[3]
